CMU Student Wins College Tuition At Poker
18th of November 2005
Jeremy Olisar will be getting around $15,000 this month to spend on his fall tuition. The check isn’t coming from a financial aid office, or his parents, but from online poker room AbsolutePoker.com. By winning their poker tournament, this Carnegie Mellon University student has free tuition as a reward for his card playing prowess.
By finishing first in the "Win Your Tuition" online poker tournament in October, Olisar can focus on studies instead of the bill. The student from Naperville, Ill, defeated opponents from over 300 colleges in the free No Limit Texas Hold'em tournament to claim the prize.
"We want to create customer loyalty and brand recognition, and college players are the fastest growing segment of online poker participants," Michael Edwards says. "But we're also a young company, and not too separated from the years when Ramen noodles and Kraft dinners were our main meals."
Edwards is the business development manager for AbsolutePoker.com, The online site is making sure that the money is going for what it is intended; Olisar must be in good scholastic standing with CMU, prove he is enrolled, and be able to produce proof of fees for tuition and books. Olisar is a 4.0 student, so odds are good his school will be cashing the check this month
