Micronesian Poker Machine’s To Pay Everyone
18th of August 2005
On the island of Saipan in Micronesia politicians seek to use tax revenue from poker machines to help pay resident’s power bills. House minority leader Arnold I Palacios is seeking a poker license fee of $10,000, up nearly half from the current fee of $6,000.
“We want to use this additional revenue for the benefit of the people by earmarking the revenues derived from it specifically to offset the impact of the fuel surcharge fee," said Palacios, according to Saipan Tribune, a Micronesian news website.
The increase would affect the 1,500 poker machines on Saipan and the nearby island of Rota. The additional revenue translates to $70 per household subsidy when based on a 2,000 kilowatt per hour usage.
