Poker Players Show Softer Side

08th of September 2005

When hurricane Katrina dashed through New Orleans, the gambling industry was devastated right along with the town and neighboring area’s infrastructure and homes. While poker and gambling and casinos often carry a negative image with some, few can argue the generous heart of the industry after recent events.

Harrah’s Entertainment, the worlds largest casino operator, is working hard to locate all of its employees affected by the devastation; there are paychecks and medical benefits still coming to them, even though the very buildings in which they worked have been destroyed.

In addition a number of poker companies are adding to the charity work by hosting online poker tournaments and offering the proceeds to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief fund.

Among the online poker sites setting up to help are Bodog Poker, Absolute Poker, and Full Tilt Poker. Not only are proceeds from entry fees going to the relief effort, but most of these and other companies participating are matching fees as well.
