Whether you are playing online poker for the very first time or a seasoned vet of the online poker realm, a poker player is wise in keeping his head and maintaining realistic expectations. A level head, combined with discipline, maintaining a clear expectation of reality will benefit any online poker player, regardless of skill level. Below are just a few online poker tips to help you play better poker online.
1. Play online poker only when you feel up to the task. Many people play poker online out of obligation. They feel they “need” to get x number of hands in per day - or else. Do not fall into this trap, as doing so can cause one to make poor decisions, play when they don’t feel like truly playing, and thus lose money needlessly. If you do not feel up to playing, take the day off!
2. Set realistic expectations and goals. Do not get tricked into believing you can do “it” every time. Just because you had a great day at the online poker tables when you played a late night session and took down 500 big blinds per hour does not mean this will happen all the time. Take the good sessions with the bad and know what kinds of results are “normal” for you. Additionally, do not get caught up hearing about how great your friend Joe is running. Most of us don’t tell anyone of the bad sessions anyway, so take it with a grain of salt and don’t let Joe’s stories change your goals and expectations.
3. Set limits when you play online poker. Let your bankroll and your attention span dictate how long of a session you put in. Set limits before hand, so that if you win or lose a given amount, you will cash out and quit. If you become distracted during your online poker session, let the level of distraction override the monetary limits.
By following these three simple online poker tips, you stand a better chance of further molding yourself into a successful and winning online poker player.
