Super System II

Some things have a timeless quality to them. “Gone with Wind”, the television show “Friends”, and the Clash’s masterpiece recording “London Calling”. All these things will mean as much in a decade as they did when they first happened. Other things are more like the film, “Weekend at Bernie’s”. They have a shining moment in the sun, and then time passes them by. When Doyle Brunson wrote “Super System” most thought this was the definitive book on the game of poker. As time slowly went on, it became more and more clear that his masterpiece was more like the cinematic romp with a dead guy, than it was the classic Civil War epic about the death of the old south in America. Doyle didn’t get where he was by being dumb though, and knew his first book was no longer good for much more than being a doorstop or paperweight, so he wrote a follow-up, “Super System II”.
The sequel to Super System was called by many the “Most Anticipated Book in the History of Poker". The history of sequels is not good, most fall flat unless they have the words “Lord of the Rings” in front of them. Surprisingly though, this book lives up to the hype. Doyle Brunson shows conclusively that he can change with the sport, and still be the one everyone looks to for safe advice.
This is a big book. The 666 pages are filled with meaningful advice, instead of just filler to run the page number up. He masterfully merges the still relevant bits of the original Super System book with brand new strategy chapters.
His updates include emphasis on games that were not in vogue back in the day of his original literary effort. For example, a Pot-Limit Omaha section did not exist in the original Super System since the game was not popular thirty years ago. Some sections were based in the original Super System book, but have gotten a thorough facelift. Sections that were redone include Limit Hold'em (re-written by Jennifer Harman.) There are also new sections in the book that are not direct poker strategy, such as "The History of No-Limit Hold'em" and "Online Poker."
This book may not be the timeless, definitive work that will stand the test of time (perhaps nothing in poker can be), but for the moment, this is a valuable tool for any poker player who wants to succeed in the current climate of professional poker.
This book can be purchased at Amazon.com for $23.07.
